FIT FOR THE SLOPES
As summer fades slowly away, those of us who are already dreaming about strapping various slidey things to our feet and throwing ourselves from the highest snow-covered peaks we can find, should really start thinking about ensuring we arrive there in a fit enough condition to enjoy our trip to the maximum.
As anyone who has tried it will know, Skiing and Snowboarding are physically demanding, intense, high-risk sports and you need a reasonable level of fitness to get started and enjoy it initially, and as you inprove, so must your fitness. The aims of the Ibiza Personal Trainer Snow-Specific Personal Training Program are to:
DEVELOP SUFFICIENT CV BASE
Good levels of CV fitness will help to raise the client’s concentration and performance levels and allow them to read the prevailing conditions better, respond to challenging terrain more confidently and ably. Overall not "gassing" on the slopes makes it a far more enjoyable experience.
DEVELOP LOWER BODY / CORE FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH & PROPRIOCEPTION (BALANCE)
Lower body (leg) strength and muscular endurance is high priority along with balance and reaction speeds. Strength training should ideally combine eccentric, concentric and depending on ability some plyometric muscle work.
Core stability is of course key in most sports, and particularly in "Balance" sports. Correct technique in snowboarding requires good rotational control of the trunk, and we will incorporate this into as many exercises as possible.
Novice snowboarders and skiers spend more time in relatively fixed degrees of flexion, they need good ‘holding’ or eccentric strength in their quadriceps. Intermediate & advanced skiers and boarders should work to equip themselves for brief sprints or bursts or when tackling more challenging terrain. Both sports tend to involve ‘high intensity-intermittent exercise’, which should be reflected in the CV training regime by including high-intensity interval work.
Skiers and boarders (especially intermediate and higher levels) repetitively overload and stretch the quads muscles, hence plyometric training can help to prepare the knees by giving them more ‘spring’.
APPROPRIATE PREHAB EXERCISES
Prehab Exercises are where a good Sport-Specific Training Program can potentially pay for itself many times over by lessening or maybe even saving you from a nasty injury & any associated Rehab treatment/s required.
The Prehab program is totally Sport Specific, and designed around mimicking the exact movements of the sport, and taking into accounts injury stats for most common injuries, and is designed to address known "weak" or accident prone areas of the body, including strengthening knee joint and knee stability, shoulder and wrist strength for falls etc
Most snowsport injuries result from falls. The surface is unpredictable and even a minor loss of balance can sometimes result in a hard fall. Snowboarders usually fall forwards or backwards, most usually injuring shoulders, wrists, cervical and lumbar spine. Skiers tend to fall sideways and backwards, when the design of ski, boot and binding mechanism can all place high torsional stress on the knee joint.
We use a variety of specially designed exercises to strengthen vulnerable areas and hopefully lessen the seriousness of any injuries, if not eliminate them altogether.
